Local organization Girlstart offers STEM Saturdays, workshops for girls in 1st through 8th grades with an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. STEM Saturdays are FREE themed, hands on workshops held at the Girlstart STEM Center at 1400 W Anderson Lane, with the following dates, themes, and appropriate age groups:

Sports MD: 6th-8th grade
January 19, 2013, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Head, shoulders, knees and toes! Discover how sports trainers and orthopedic surgeons keep athletes performing at their best. Examine your heart rate and engineer a prosthetic joint with a hinge.

Gears Galore! 3rd-5th grade
February 16, 2013, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Get ready to tinker! Bring your creativity and design skills to construct simple machines. Discover the use of gears, motors, levers and more to make things move.

Going Green: 1st-2nd grade with parents
April 27, 2013, 9:30 a.m. - noon

Celebrate Earth Day with Girlstart! Explore how the power of wind and sun can help conserve nature's energy. Create a solar oven to bake tasty treats at home.

Founded in Austin, Texas, in 1997, Girlstart is one of the few community-based informal education programs in the nation specifically dedicated to empowering and equipping K–12 girls in STEM. Since its inception, Girlstart has served more than 30,000 girls and 5,500 teachers and families through school- and community-based programs, including afterschool clubs, summer camps, science career conferences and expos, large-scale science events for families, teacher workshops, online teaching and learning resources, and virtual learning communities.
