Blue Baker, a family-run artisan bakery that recently opened in the Arboretum, offers free bakery tours for children of all ages.  I took my nine-year-old on the tour on Monday and we had a fun (and delicious) morning at the bakery!

Blue Baker tours take children behind the scenes of the bakery, to learn about the artisan baking process. Kids see how the equipment works and get their hands a nice dusty white, feeling different types of flour.

Participants are taken through the process of baking bread step-by-step and encouraged to ask questions along the way.

Following the tour, kids are given a ball of dough and several toppings, to make their own small loaf of bread.  Creativity is encouraged.  My son made a dragon loaf with his chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, cranberries and raisins.

When the decorating is done, tour participants (and their adults) enjoy a snack of freshly baked cookies.  They are also given a coupon for a free cookie, which is awfully hard to save for "another day."  My son cashed his in for a Snickerdoodle immediately.

The kids' loaves of bread are available to be picked up after 4 p.m. the afternoon of the tour, or on the following day.  My son was thrilled with his dragon bread and was very proud to share the yummy treat with his grandma (the bread baker in our family).

Tours are available for groups, which average between 20 and 30 people, including adults. You must have a minimum of 15 people, including adults, to book a tour.  If you are interested in scheduling a tour, contact comments@bluebaker.com.  Include the number of people in your group, the ages of the children, and your preferred tour time.  Tours are generally offered Monday - Wednesday, between 9 and 10 a.m.
