Just last week we were searching for free indoor playgrounds, and today I found one unexpectedly!  Visiting REI in Round Rock for the first time, we followed the signs to the third floor and discovered a really cool play area.

REI has so much fun crammed into this little corner of the store!  Kids can practice hiking, paddling, climbing, cycling, and camping!  It's a very clever play spot. When kids pedal the bike, it makes the birds in the tree fly around.

Kids can try on life jackets and pretend to paddle through the "waterfall."  They follow trail markers.

Grabbing onto the ropes, kids can hoist themselves up the make-believe mountainside.

There are scenic lookouts on high and caves to explore down low.

My children had a grand time exploring and pretending.  One very useful thing to know is that the restrooms are also on the third floor, cleverly concealed, next to the shoes.  Do not run all the way down three flights of stairs to ask someone at the register where the bathrooms are, only to have to run all the way back up again!  It is also handy to know that there is, in fact, an elevator at the rear of the store.  You can avoid those stairs altogether.

REI in Round Rock hosts tons of free events in the store, which you can find here.  You must register in advance for these classes and workshops, as they have a limited number spots available.
